Weidachweg trail and the return of the "Bergmännchen”

They're back! They're back!!!

This is what we exclaimed at the opening of the trail along the Bartolo Creek, called “Weidachweg”, which literally means 'path of the water willows'; there are these, but also many other lush plants...

The legend tells that the Bergmännchen,  very industrious gnomes with a large, conical red hat and bushy white beards, used to live on and guard the slopes of Mount Priesnig. Always eluding people's view and sunlight, one day the gnomes disappeared... only their stories remained, stories about their crafts and their gluttony for apple juice and rosehip jam. People were hoping for their return, and this was accomplished thanks to the commitment and passion of Tarvisio’s Councillor for Tourism, who was the first to identify the importance of passing the stories that live on in the region on to children (I correct myself: also on to those who are no longer children, but remain so in their hearts, and with these stories can dream and return to their childhood).

And so a very pleasant trail was built, mostly flat, suitable for children as well as prams. The trail goes along the Bartolo Creek and goes from Lower Tarvisio (Via Torrente) to the outer city centre, to the area of the Duca D’Aosta Ski Slopes. Of course the attraction is the numerous replicas of the gnomes that decorate and keep you company all along the trail. The trail can be taken in the opposite direction, and it is equipped with a few benches to rest or picnic, and a playground with a slide and swings.

We mentioned that the gnomes are very industrious; therefore, you will find the fisherman gnome, the hunter, the farmer, the brewer, the painter, the blacksmith, the cook... and as in any community worthy of this name there is also the sleepyhead, which in another story was indeed called "Sleepy"...

It is precisely this idyllic combination of nature and fairy tale that can be appreciated on this trail: Tarvisio's bell tower, which is always visible and accompanies you along the path, the roar of the Bartolo Creek, and, above all, the shrieks of happy children who rush out in search of the gnomes, crying "there's another one!“
