Trieste and the Kleine Berlin

There is a place in the centre of Trieste, which you come across almost by chance when strolling in the area of the court. It is the Kleine Berlin situated in Via Fabio Severo.

What is the Kleine Berlin?
It is a large network of underground anti-aircraft tunnels, dating back to the Second World War.
The Kleine Berlin is divided into two: one section includes the tunnels built by German soldiers immediately after the "Adriatic Coastal Operation Zone" was established in October 1943, whereas the other section was built by the Italians, in particular by the Municipality of Trieste, and acted as an air-raid shelter for the civilian population.

In the tunnels, we can currently find artefacts such as posters and photographs of that time, as well as equipment used during the war, for example, gas masks preserved in a dedicated showcase or objects from everyday life.
I have had the opportunity to visit it twice, once for a press conference and then for a musical event. After both times, I remembered the many special impressions and sensations that this place, steeped in history, evokes.

Since 1995, the Club Alpinistico Triestino has been authorised by the City Council to use the Kleine Berlin, which can be visited upon booking (Tel. +39 3392539712, e-mail: kleineberlin@cat.ts.it), or every last Friday of the month, the day when you only need to arrive at 8pm at the entrance in Via Fabio Severo (opposite no. 11).

Just one piece of advice: be prepared for the humidity because it is like being in a cave!
