The Roman Aqueduct of the Rosandra Valley

The Nature Reserve of the Rosandra Valley is a treasure trove of geodiversity and history, including a section of the ancient Roman aqueduct. The section, dating back to the 1st century A.D., is visible at the beginning of the trail that starts from the village of Bagnoli Superiore and crosses the entire valley.

The aqueduct was used to transport the water of the Rosandra River from the valley of Monte Carso to the city of Trieste (then called Tergeste) and covered a distance of 17 kilometres.

In addition to its practical function, the aqueduct is an example of how the ancient Romans integrated architecture into the landscape, creating long-lasting works.

Exploring the Rosandra Valley is a way of plunging into history, which lives on and is witnessed by the nature and the stones of the Trieste Karst; in fact, by following the path, visitors can reach the small Church of Maria in Siaris, walking through a variety of different landscapes and vegetation coexisting in the same area.
