“In search of the tracks of the old tramway” is an ecomuseum project that stems from the desire to recount a piece of the collective memory of the hill communities, which between 1889 and 1955 were crossed, and above all united, by the Udine - S. Daniele del Friuli tramway. Thanks to the support of local actors, such as the Comunità Collinare del Friuli and the support of various administrations such as the Municipality of Udine, in 2021 it was possible to create a map showing both the old route followed by the tramway and a new route that would be a beauty of the hillside territory.
Designed by Engineer Karl Neufeldelt, at the time the owner of railway companies and the major shareholder of Ferriere di Udine, he developed the original project together with Engineer Giovanni Stampetta: the tram started from the main station called Udine porta Gemona and continued towards Torreano, Martignacco, Fagagna and San Daniele del Friuli. Along the way, there were several stops such as Rizzi, Colugna, Cormor and up to San Daniele. To complete the entire journey, in 1889 it would take about two hours between the Udine Ferrovia station and San Daniele. The railway was definitively abandoned with the introduction of new vehicles and with the paving of the San Daniele - Rodeano - Fagagna provincial road in the 1950s.
Almost 70 years of activity led to the vehicle acquiring the nickname ‘vacje’ for its slowness and in some local inhabitants the memory of the vehicle submerged in snow or stopped on the Giavons ascent pushed by travellers is still alive.
