On a sunny day in September, I took a basket and went to the vineyards.
The pleasant temperature of these late summer days and the rich green vegetation provided a regenerating mid-week break.
On Thursdays, Azienda del Poggio, located in the hills just a few kilometres from San Daniele del Friuli, organises a picnic in the vineyard, an event open to the public from 11am to 6pm.
Whichever direction you take to get to the winery, you are surrounded by a relaxing landscape with a panorama that offers cultivated fields alternating with woods. It is impossible for us not to pull over at the edge of the road to appreciate the view over these hills.
Once on the dirt road that leads to the winery, the building immediately appears in all its beauty, nestled on the hill and surrounded by a huge lawn with rows of vines all around it.
Signora Cristina, the co-owner of the winery with her husband, greets us. She accompanies us to choose a spot for our lunch break.
The huge well-kept garden offers a wide choice of spaces for laying a blanket and tasting the specialities in the picnic basket.
We sit in the shade of centuries-old trees at the edge of the lawn, from where you can enjoy a full view of the surrounding area.
We have a gourmet picnic basket with the best products from the local area, accompanied by an excellent bottle of sparkling Brut from the Vulpes range.
Regenerated by this lunch break, we are already planning our next pic&taste experience.
Going along the "Strada del Vino e dei Sapori" of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, we get to San Dorligo della Valle (TS). At Azienda Parovel, not only rows of vines await us but also olive trees, the sea breeze and the river Rosandra.
And, of course, a delicious glass of Malvasia Istriana.
Friulian and much more.
I started travelling when I was 3 months old, returning to Friuli at the age of 13.
I discovered this region by looking at it through the eyes of a traveller. I love its versatile nature and I believe in its incredible potential.
I came back to my roots by bringing the changing seasons to the meal table and talking about them on my cookery blog.
