Sea&taste on the Stella River

Are the days getting hot? Sultry? Is the sand scorching? What could be better than a nice boat ride!

The steamboat tour Santa Maria that takes us to visit the Laguna di Marano and navigate up the river Stella, tasting the local specialities...well, I would say that's a perfect day!
Then follow me on this adventure of  Boat & Taste on the Stella River.

We leave the Adriatic Sea and the golden beach of Lignano to sail between barene, velme (sand- and mudbanks) and islands in the beautiful Marano lagoon.

We sail past the pine forests and the casoni (the typical fisherman dwellings of Marano, made of lake reeds and wood), and we begin to insinuate ourselves among the reeds, spying around us herons, mallards, cormorants, ducks, egrets, coots, swans and the inevitable seagulls, which accompany us towards the mouth of the Stella River. This beautiful resurgent river, which springs from the subsoil at the confluence between high and low plains, in the Parco Le Risorgive, belongs to the eponymous nature reserve and is navigable for most of its course.
We will follow it up to Precenicco, deep into the Friulian plain, in search of the best products of the Route of Wine and Flavours, visiting the winery Battista II and tasting its excellent wines (Ribolla gialla, the flagship product typical of our region, had great success), one of the thousand agribusiness farms that dot its territory.

Before returning there's still a surprise left for us: a visit to the Bilancia di Bepi, a fishing net on stilts, where time has stopped. Here, on a branch of the river, a large net is dropped and lifted to catch excellent fresh fish that can then be eaten on the spot. We enjoyed a scrumptious fish fry-up!

It's time to go back. Bye-bye lagoon.

Where to stay

I was born in Trieste, some years ago. Not too many but I would say the right number.
I love nature, the sea, the mountains, travelling, films, art, theatrical performances, and telling stories...
So, let's use images and words to tell you about this beautiful region of ours, because being here is already a little like being on holiday.
