Mouth of Crosis

The gorge of the Torre river, flanked to the west by the Stella Mountains (785 m above sea level) and to the east by La Bernadia, stretches from Potcladie to the north, down to Bocca di Crosis in the south, for a length of approximately three kilometers. The valley is very deep and resembles many karst valleys, so it is almost surprising that the river at its base has not disappeared due to karstism. In this magnificent valley, the Torre is supported in a bed that marks the base, or almost the base, to the area subject to karstism and which, therefore, is practically impermeable. The very steep slopes of Mount Stella host a thermophilic scrubland characterized by the presence of black hornbeam, downy oak, and Turkey oak, with scree, outcropping rocks, and cliffs overlooking the Torre. On the opposite side, however, the northwestern exposure allows for a greater water content in the soil, which favors, within the forestry consortia, the spread of mesophilic tree species such as the common ash, the sycamore maple and, at higher altitudes, the beech, to the detriment of thermophilic species such as the downy oak.
