The Temple of San Spiridione and multicultural Trieste

One of the things I love most about Trieste is its multicultural nature.
Its strength lies in its being a border city and it is therefore decentralised with in relation to the rest of Italy. As the Free Port of the Habsburg Empire, it became a magnificent crossroads of cultures, where traditions, people, languages and religions all interact.

Trieste is home to a large number of places of worship of religions other than the Catholic religion.
Of these, you must not miss a visit to the Serbian-Orthodox Temple of the Holy Trinity and of St. Spiridione. Built between 1861 and 1869, it replaced the former Orthodox temple of 1753, which was demolished because it was unsafe.

The church overlooks the Grand Canal, right in the centre of Trieste. The church building is so beautiful and finely decorated that it cannot go unnoticed. Gold, white and wonderful blue domes of various dimensions are combined in a perfect Byzantine style, which immediately lets your mind travel to distant places.

The interior of the church, however, is no less important. As soon as I entered it, I immediately felt surrounded by the beauty of this place. A place for meditation and reflection, where you can indulge in the fine oil paintings with predominant gold hues, representing scenes and religious figures, and the blue sky that covers the entire ceiling.

The church of St. Spiridone is a real treasure to explore and admire while the intense smell of incense spreads through the air.

A travel blogger, copywriter and social media manager, I am Friulian by birth and feel myself a citizen of the world, every corner of which I love to explore. Born in the wrong era, I love discussing the world as seen through my eyes on my blog. I will speak of art and culture, small hamlets, country houses and castles.
