The Pedemontana railway, travelling from Udine to Sacile

On a not-so-mild day in mid-May, some people thought of going out, looking for an alternative, and bought a ticket. Not just an ordinary ticket but one for a journey through our region on a steam train
A steam train, which all children have always dreamed of and certainly one that has stuck in the memory of many adults. Departing from Udine, station after station, it has taken passengers on board. On the train, amazing empathy is created, for a moment you feel like a traveller in time. Children, with their noses squashed against the glass window can't believe it is happening while experiencing the excitement of their first train journey. Halfway along the route, a technical stop is a must.

The train needs to be loaded and the adverse conditions do not affect the passengers who curiously gather near the engine, where the engine drivers manually fill up with coal and water. On arrival at Sacile railway station, perfect organisation transfers passengers to visit Tenuta Brandolini, a 19th century villa, surrounded by a huge and spectacular English-style park.
The Villa, home to the Vistorta winery, has enormous rooms and a magnificent exhibition of bottles.

For the passengers there are more surprises to come: under its loggia two very long tables are ready to welcome them while the smell from the barbecue spreads through the air. After taking some refreshments, the passengers continue their trip heading to Sacile. The highlight of the visit is Palazzo Ragazzoni, where guides show its wonders and allow the visitors to admire frescoes by Francesco Montemazzano.

And then it's time to return.  The steam train is waiting for the happy passengers, who have spent a day in a different way among the beautiful attractions of our region.

Friulian and much more.
I started travelling when I was 3 months old, returning to Friuli at the age of 13.
I discovered this region by looking at it through the eyes of a traveller. I love its versatile nature and I believe in its incredible potential.
I came back to my roots by bringing the changing seasons to the meal table and talking about them on my cookery blog.
