Today I’ll tell you about a place in which the naturalness of little things generates beauty. It is a meeting place, a place of water and migratory flights: it is theFoci dello Stella Nature Reserve, in Marano lagoon.
Here the Stella River, born 45 km away, flows gently into the Adriatic Sea.
My journey begins at Piancada, a Palazzolo dello Stella village where, once you leave your car behind, you get to what I call the ‘middle zone’. You switch off the engine, pick up your rucksack and get deep into nature.
#labilanciadibepi is the meeting place between life in a hurry and the slowly changing seasons. A wood platform and its great square net stretched out on a branch from the Stella River, thanks to which the catch of the day is collected.
The linchpin of this place is Bepi’s nephew, Daniele, who has succeeded in finding the right equilibrium between respect for the nature area and the demands of modern tourism.
My journey continues to the tune of slow paddling in a canoe. I soon leave my initial caution with the canoe behind, thanks to the professionalism of the #thewildsup instructors who, in addition to technical tips on paddling, describe the features of the reserve to me. In the midst of the reeds, families of mute swans observe us.
Imagine the beauty of this place during the migratory period. Half way along the ‘casoni’ appear, incredible, minimalist and elegant homes. The load bearing structure is wood which is covered with strips of bamboo. Inside there is a great fireplace around which the fishermen’s lives revolve. It feels like a parallel universe. After a pleasant break the return journey begins.
In the meantime the tides have risen and as we get closer to Bepi’s net it looks even bigger, suspended between dream and reality.
Friulian and much more.
I started travelling when I was 3 months old, returning to Friuli at the age of 13.
I discovered this region by looking at it through the eyes of a traveller. I love its versatile nature and I believe in its incredible potential.
I came back to my roots by bringing the changing seasons to the meal table and talking about them on my cookery blog.
