Dancing the Resiana for Carnival

Originally from Val Resia, I have the pleasure every year of experiencing the Resian Carnival, also called Püst in the local dialect, an important and unmissable festival for the inhabitants of the valley.

For those who have never heard of it, the Resia Carnival (a small valley North-East of Friuli Venezia Giulia) is certainly one of the most characteristic traditional events of our region.
The celebrations go on for a few days and anybody who wishes to take part will be caught up in the melodies and songs and will be able to have a go at the Resian dance steps.

One piece of advice: do not forget to dress up! There is no need for elaborate costumes: all you have to wear is an old suit, a coat worn back to front or a hat or wig on your head and you will immediately be immersed in the carnival spirit.
The most colourful day is the Sunday of Carnival, in Resian, it is also called  Püstawa Nadëja. On this occasion, starting from 2.30 pm onwards, the beautiful white masks /Lipe Bile Maškire, the typical masks of the Resian Carnival invade the squares in the hamlet of San Giorgio.  They are the ones that with their little bells, their colours and their white robes, involve everyone in the rhythmic dances that continue well into the night.

For the Resians, owning a Carnival costume is a great asset and is a source of pride. The headdress full of crepe paper flowers, the white skirts, the socks are all elements made entirely by hand by the same wearers with the help of relatives and friends.
If you are asking yourselves “Is the hat heavy” I will tell you “ Of course! The one I wear weighs 1kg and 100gr!”

Part of my origins is sunk in the small Val Resia, for me a source of inspiration from which I have learned to appreciate and love the world of traditions and folklore.
