Cormòns: the best of the Collio area and that fantastic Osvaldo

'Have you ever tasted Osvaldo?'

When you are asked a question like this on the spot, you are a little puzzled and start to think that perhaps they are offering you a huge cannibal buffet, that poor Osvaldo is the cutest rabbit in the brood or…

'Let's go to Cormòns, we can find Osvaldo there’… perhaps he's the most handsome guy in the town?
Well, none of my previous fanciful ideas proved right… Osvaldo is one of the best types of cured ham produced in the region, along with San Daniele ham. This very special ham, with limited production, is best tasted in Cormons. In spring, a trip to the Collio area offers an unparalleled panorama… rolling hills covered in blossoming trees… who can avoid such a welcome?
Having a weekend free, I take advantage to go to Cormòns with the idea of tasting the best food and wine that the local area has to offer. A short trip for an aperitif, a snack, a walk and nothing more, well aware that these simple little trips offer a world of sensorial flavours and aromas, as well as being beautiful and relaxing.

The small town of Cormòns is surrounded by the rolling hills of the Collio area, which certainly encourage you to stop at all the wineries. Here, we are in the most prestigious winemaking area of the region, with internationally renowned leading brands that are often awarded by food and wine guides.
Walking around the town centre, you can discover the Duomo (Cathedral) of San Adalberto overlooking the town centre and the very beautiful Church of Rosa Mistica Santa Caterina, as well as the centrally located theatre, which hosts many shows and has a varied programme of performances by leading theatrical companies.

And in the square, the amazing “Enoteca Regionale di Cormòns” established by the local winemakers' association have created a central location in the Collio area, where customers, tourists and sommeliers, who arrive from all over the world, can be made welcome and can taste the local “nectar of the Gods”. Perhaps, even pairing it with a few good platters of hams and cheeses or other local specialities.
Right in front of the Enoteca, you can find a bike infopoint with details of all the recommended itineraries for exploring the local area, including routes that also lead to the sea. Here, a tasting is a must! And look out for their programme of events, with regular evenings of particular interest, special themes and collaborations with local restaurateurs.

After this, I head towards Capriva del Friuli, a few kilometres away, to take a look at beautiful Spessa Castle, one of the most attractive locations in the region for events, ceremonies, meetings, tastings and playing golf because it is surrounded by wonderful gardens and golf courses. It offers a choice of refreshment facilities: a restaurant, a bistrot, the "Hosteria del Castello" and a wine shop.

It has a beautiful park, where you can walk along the “Sentiero Casanova” (Casanova's Path), so-called as a tribute to Giacomo Casanova who stayed at the castle in 1773.

I chose the Hosteria, a few delightful glasses of wine and canapés with "Osvaldo", but we also tasted some other delicious cold cuts.
