“S” as in… Raveo!

If your mother tells you that the only biscuit she eats for breakfast or with afternoon tea is the “S” (Esse) biscuit, what would you do?
Your mother is your mother, so why not ask her to get into your car and then you can take her directly to the place where they are made?
So off we go to Raveo.
The village lies in a lush green hollow on the slopes of Monte Sorantri (896 m asl), in the Val Degano, on the right bank of the stream of the same name, in the alpine region of Carnia, not far from Tolmezzo, the chief town of the area.
The village belongs to the ”Borghi Autentici d'Italia” (Authentic Villages of Italy) club and is a real gem, thanks to the houses around the church of the Santuario della Madonna di Raveo (Sanctuary of Our Lady of Raveo), built in 1619.
What always really fascinates me about these small villages in my region are the many “murales” or frescoes on the façades of houses, depicting scenes from the past, which, with a few colours and skilful images, evoke the true story of an area or a place.

Many beautiful places can be found here, such as historical houses: for example, in Via Norsinia you can admire the Casa di Miàn, which has a façade, probably 17th century, overlooking a courtyard. The rear façade, now the main one, dates back to the 18th century and has a fine stone portal dated 1768.
A short stroll leads us to our destination, namely the laboratory that makes these famous biscuits.

Only seven ingredients are used, the same as the number of musical notes: flour, eggs, sugar, butter, vanilla, raising agent (ammonium bicarbonate) and salt, and just like the seven notes they give rise to unforgettable symphonies for the palate.
The “Esse” biscuit was created in the shape of an “S” because it was easy to twist both ends and, in my opinion, it is easy to break one in half and share it…

Naturally, we could not come here just to buy biscuits and I discovered a charming tavern that includes “Cjarsons” among the various dishes it offers. These are the ravioli of the Carnia region par excellence filled with Esse biscuits… and various other ingredients.
Come and taste its exquisiteness!
