Fishing

Marble and brown trout, grayling and brook trout swimming in pure, crystal-clear waters

Far away from the mainstream tourist destinations, Friuli Venezia Giulia is a land of wonder, where the Alps and the Dolomites embrace an amazing sea.
This is where you can experience the unmistakable atmosphere of true wilderness, with sweeping coniferous forests intertwined with rushing torrents of water and turquoise alpine lakes.
A border stretching eight thousand square kilometres where the eastern edge of the Dolomites rises to meet the rugged Alps, which are rich in wildlife untouched by the frenzy of modern times. This is the glory of Friuli Venezia Giulia.

A paradise for fly fishing and lure fishing (spinning) enthusiasts, with dedicated beats of rivers and lakes exclusively for catch-and-release with pure trout boasting their distinctive colours.
Within this diverse wilderness lies peace and a quiet reconnection with nature, far removed from the frantic pace of the modern world. A stark Alpine landscape with a flair for celebrated cuisine, award-winning vineyards and a rich artistic, historical and cultural heritage waiting to be fully explored for a true life experience that goes far beyond fishing

Friuli Venezia Giulia is all about discovery
Come and experience it for yourself

Fish species

In Friuli Venezia Giulia countless waterways are home to a wide and rich variety of fish species. But there are some fish that, more than others, are the dream of every fly fishing and lure fishing (spinning) lover, especially in the mountains. The marble trout (Salmo trutta marmoratus) is undoubtedly one of the most prized catches because of its strength and colourful livery. It is the quintessential native fish of this territory. The brown trout (Salmo trutta fario) is the symbol of fast-flowing torrents and the high mountains. Moving down the valley, the grayling (Thymallus thymallus) is the symbol of the history of fishing in Friuli Venezia Giulia. And who can forget the brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) and the arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus), the voracious predators of the lakes at high altitude.

It is almost impossible to choose the best fishing spots in the mountains of Friuli Venezia Giulia among the thousands of kilometres of water. There are endless variables to take into account, making it impossible to choose. To say the truth... almost impossible. Surely, one of the possibilities is to start by pointing you in the direction of some of the most impressive spots so that you can begin your fishing journey to discover this wonderful area.

Licences and permits

The Regional Fisheries Heritage Protection Agency (Ente Tutela Patrimonio Ittico - ETPI) is the sole institution responsible for the management of fisheries resources at the regional level, with the aim of protecting and increasing fish stocks, safeguarding the aquatic environment and promoting sustainable fishing activities, with a view to the possible development of tourist hospitality linked to recreational fishing.

It is very important for every angler to be aware of the regulations, permits and licences required to enjoy an unforgettable day or more of fishing in peace and in compliance with the law. All the necessary information is available on the official ETPI website and at the many Infopoints spread across the Region.
