An itinerary where you pedal among the peaks of the Aupa Valley, discovering mountain villages, ancient traditions and authentic flavors.
Itinerary
In the valley of the Pontebbana stream-a state border between the Kingdom of Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire from 1866 to 1918-a moderately challenging bike route in terms of length, elevation gain and ascent is followed. It takes place on paved roads with little local traffic and on the Alpe Adria bike path (FVG1). From Pontebba, the route winds following the signs for Studena Alta toward Sella di Cereschiatis, which opens the Val Aupa. It then continues in the direction of Moggio Udinese, returning to close the loop.
Food & wine
Passing through Moggio Udinese, look for brovadâr, fermented turnips in alternate layers with savoy cabbage leaves, born out of a need to preserve food during the winter period. The same purpose also gave rise to sasaka, a creamy paste made from surplus cured meats, lard and spices, an ancient mountain sustenance eaten as a snack by lumberjacks spread on bread, and today a flavor enhancer in many traditional recipes. RECOMMENDED DISH: Brovadâr Soup

-The MICOTRA train is a special international, intermodal convoy between Udine and Villach (A) and can carry more than 70 bicycles in special cars. It makes two daily round trips and in summer extends its run to Gorizia and Trieste.
-State Railways has several daily trainsets connecting Udine to Tarvisio and can carry over 30 bicycles each
