Biking on the sites of the Great War: from Monfalcone to Gorizia, passing through Mount San Michele and the Redipuglia Military Memorial, the largest in Italy.
This route of great historical value crosses the Gorizia karst. Starting from Monfalcone, one pedals through the low karst mountains, infamously known for having been the scene of the main battles on the Eastern Front of World War I. After passing Doberdò del Lago you pass through San Martino del Carso, a place to which a poem was dedicated by Giuseppe Ungaretti. Continue on and you arrive on Mount San Michele, a place known for its trenches that are located inside the open-air museum. Also interesting is the multimedia museum where the latest technology allows the visitor to relive the dramatic events that occurred in this area. We continue through Savogna d'Isonzo to arrive in Gorizia, where in one of its trattorias, we can take a small regenerating break. The return to Monfalcone passes through Gradisca d'Isonzo and Sagrado before reaching Fogliano di Redipuglia, where a visit to Italy's largest military shrine is a must.
In Doberdò del Lago you can take a small detour to reach the lake of the same name.
