The Refuge Tunnel

History, memory, and technology

The Refuge Tunnel in Monfalcone offers an immersive experience that combines history, memory, and technology.

Measuring 266 metres in length, 6 metres width and 5 metres in height, the tunnel has two entrances, one from Piazza della Repubblica and the other upstream of the railway along Salita alla Rocca.

Located at the foot of the Fortress, it was built as a shelter from Anglo-American air raids during the Second World War. It was capable of accommodating hundreds of people, providing a safe refuge during the bombings that struck the city between 1944 and 1945.

The Municipality of Monfalcone has decided to bring this place back to life through a museum itinerary that leads visitors through sounds, images and testimonies: a large, illuminated timeline guides the way, while talking silhouettes, artefacts and multimedia installations give voice to the memories of those who found protection and hope inside the Tunnel.

Given the particulare environment (internal temperature of approximately 12°C and high humidity level), visits to the shelter tunnel are exclusively for small groups (min. 8 - max. 25 people) accompanied by guides.
The visit lasts approximately 75 minutes.

Appropriate clothing is recommended for access (closed shoes, clothing suitable for the internal temperature).
