The “pink” side is definitely the most crowded, indeed very crowded. Suffice it to say that there are peaks of three thousand tickets a day, in a colourful, lively and noisy chaos.
The scene is very different in the men’s area: here there is always plenty of space, even empty spaces and a silence unattainable beyond the wall. Between sunbathing and a swim, the favourite pastime is cards.
A curious detail. The name “Pedocin” is linked to various hypotheses. In 1800, this area was used to delouse – “spidocchiare” – horses, but there are those who remember mussel farms just off the beach here, mussels being “pedoci” in the dialect of Trieste. For a while, people called it “ciodin” – nail in dialect – because they would hang their clothes on a nail before changing into their costume.
Every summer TV crews come from all over the world, as well as many journalists, to document the success of the establishment and the original wall, which, after centuries, still retains a timeless appeal.
