Alpe Adria Trail open day 2018

Four friends and a 10 km walk to discover traditions, history and food and wine along the last part of stage 33 of the cross-border trekking route. On the occasion of the Open Day 2018, the Alpe Adria Trail inaugurated the tourist season with a special event. After the welcome ceremony at the Associazione Kremenjak in Iamiano, a village near Doberdò del Lago, we left together with our nature guide for the Monument to the 65th Infantry regiment.

Through forest paths and clearings, which still bear traces of the First World War trenches, we arrived at the first stop, where the "Grigioverdi del Carso" Cultural History Group was waiting for us, together with a snack offering products prepared by the GAL Carso.

Charged up and full of energy we headed towards the Foci del Timavo, where the river, which rises in Slovenia, appears above ground for a second time again after travelling forty kilometres underground; the protected area with its old plane trees has been an important place of worship since antiquity with the present basilica of Basilica of San Giovanni in Tuba built here in 1400 over a much earlier church.

After leaving for the Villaggio del Pescatore, a small tourist centre in the municipality of Duino-Aurisina, we stopped at the palaeontological site for a brief but stimulating visit organised by the Cooperativa Gemina. The former limestone quarry has become a site of worldwide interest since 1994 thanks to the discovery of a complete skeleton of a perfectly preserved dinosaur, and today the area continues to reveal some remarkable fossil remains.

Leaving the site, we then headed to the Castle of Duino, perched on a promontory overlooking the sea, about which there is the legend of the White Lady, a princess betrayed by her lover and transformed into a rock. The Castle has been a source of inspiration for many poets and writers and is part of the Falesie Nature Reserve, a protected area that hosts typical Mediterranean vegetation.

After an aperitif in the castle gardens amid flowers and the tang of salt, we continued our journey along the Rilke path, dedicated to the Bohemian poet Rainer Maria Rilke. This is a panoramic walk connecting Duino to Sistiana offering exceptional panoramic views of the Gulf of Trieste.

When we arrived in Sistiana, a delicious lunch awaited us, with typical cheeses and salami from the Karst, with names like Tabor and Jamar, which are matured within the karst caves, accompanied by Terrano and Vitovska wines, a real triumph of flavours. This has been a unique experience that I recommend to everyone to explore the places of the Karst and rediscover them in a different guise, that of explorers.
