Easter on Lussari, a white show

For a long time my family has wanted to see the Monte Santo, enchanted by the photographs that circulate of it and even more by the advertising of a famous car that shows the fairy tale village as a backdrop, so what better time than at Easter to visit Lussari (Tarvisio)? There is still snow, and the temperatures that are really not spring-like convince me to book for lunch up there in a typical local inn. We take the gondola lift at Camporosso and already after the first metres of ascent you can note the impressive Pista di Prampero, a paradise for skiers in terms of beauty and adrenaline. How many times I have launched myself down here on the skis; of all the places where I have skied, this is definitely one of the most beautiful slopes I've tried.

As you are about to reach the top and with your nose stuck to the glass of the gondola you find yourself as it were glued to the window of a pastry shop at Christmas: the view is like an immense snowy cake with marzipan houses, icing sugar, tons of cream. You have a strong desire to detach a cottage and eat it in secret! Then when you get to the village the fairy tale begins: the small church dominates the tiny village that is a succession of mountains huts and eateries for the refreshment of tourists plus a gift shop. The faithful are at Mass; yes, indeed, because in the first place this is a religious destination, especially in the summer, when many arrive on foot along the “Pilgrim’s Path”. Legend has it that a shepherd found the statue of the Madonna on the mountain and gave it to the parish priest in the valley but every day the statue returned right there, on top of the mountain where the first little church was erected in her honour and the endless pilgrimages began. The Madonnina dei Tre Confini has instilled peace, joy and trust for centuries. A look at the breathtaking view of the snowy Julian Alps, an aperitif strictly with "Friulano" wine, and even our four-legged friends seem to be in ecstasy in the snow thanks to the new friends they can make, so Holly chases Whiskey who’s playing with Patty... and owners smile, happy not to have to leave them at home. Then lunch; every place has various offerings of a typical mountain menu. I opt for the goulash, which while not originally from Friuli Venezia Giulia, has like many other  traditional border dishes found a wide following in our cuisine. And at the end a real grappa dilemma: grappa with wild strawberries or blueberries?!
