Collinbici: a thriller in the castles of the morainic hills

Today I am pedalling to the morainic hills of Friuli on a circular route that crosses the territories of the municipalities of Fagagna, Moruzzo and Colloredo di Monte Albano. Along these roads, we will pass nine castles, some of which are beautifully preserved (and can be visited during the “Castelli Aperti” days), others undergoing restoration, and others still whose remains reveal traces of stories of conspiracy and betrayal: veritable medieval thrillers.

But it is not these thrillers that light up our eyes, but the colours of nature that warm us every season and flood us with a characteristic yellow on the Friulian hills. In the spring we are dazzled by the reflections from the rape plants, in the summer by wheat and sunflowers, in autumn with the corn and golden tops of the trees and in winter, with the low sun on the horizon, and the colour of the resting soil.

From the naturalistic point of view, the itinerary passes (or demands only short detours) the magnificent “Oasis dei Quadris” of Fagagna, with its storks and the hermit ibis, the peaty area of Borgo Pegoraro at Moruzzo and various torrents along the morainic belt, the Corno and the Cormor being the main ones. These are all important evidence of the last glaciations, which created this particular habitat. It is not difficult to come across herons, red deer and foxes. On the site you will find all the information about the route with map and height differences; it is suitable for everyone because it does not have any technical difficulties or much in the way of ups and downs, and where there are climbs, they are short.

Historical Traces not to be missed:

- Castles of Fagagna, fortification of La Brunelde (Casali Lini), Villalta, Moruzzo, S. Margherita, Brazzacco (lower and upper), Colloredo di Monte Albano, Mels and Caporiacco.

- remains of a Roman villa in Moruzzo.

- tumulus of Foscjàn, a tumulus grave near the castle of Villalta probably dating back to the Bronze Age.

Where to stay

Giuliano Piccoli

I’m 43, I was born and raised in the hills of Friuli. I cycle all over the region, especially in the eastern pre-alpine and alpine zone. In winter I enjoy skiing on the slopes and ski mountaineering. With a passion for regional history, I’m very interested in the historical and artistic events of Friuli’s lesser-known areas.
