Food and wine itinerary: Ramandolo wine and goat cheese

My husband, Marco, and I went last week to Taipana, a village in the Valle del Torre (Udine), to visit a dairy where they make delicious goat cheese.

The trip also gave us the opportunity to stop along our way at Ramandolo (Nimis), the home of one of Friuli Venezia Giulia’s DOCG wines (denominazione di origine controllata e garantita, the highest legal category for only the finest wines). Ramandolo is a sweet wine with a golden hue. It is produced in limited quantities because the area in which it can be made is itself very limited. It is a fine accompaniment to petit fours, cheese, smoked trout and San Daniele prosciutto.

We leave Nimis and Ramandolo behind us and proceed towards Taipana, then we climb up to Platischis and the locality called Zore. A narrow mountain road takes us to the goat farm.

At this time of year, i.e. in February and March, the kids are born and they like to be cuddled, so this is an ideal destination for families, too; the children love seeing the animals. The farm shop is always open, from Monday to Sunday (except during the winter closure), and visits can be booked. Fresh and mature goat cheese is a tradition in Friuli Venezia Giulia. Ramandolo wine and goat cheese make an excellent pairing, try it and see!
