Former Church of St. Michael – Collection of frescoes

Frescoes, evidence of the 1976 earthquake

The Church of St. Michael, where today the Collection of frescoes of Gemona is situated, was built inside the town walls in 1447 and consecrated three years later. Between 1884 and 1885 it was pulled down to be built again outside the walls.

Destroyed in the terrible earthquake that hit Friuli in 1976, it was rebuilt afterwards with the philological aim of interpreting it as pure volume next to the Porta Udine gate (the only one remaining of the town's original seven gates).

At present, the former Church of St. Michael houses an elegant meeting room and an exhibition of frescoes (which can be dated back from the 14th century to the 17th century) coming from the non-rebuilt Churches of Santa Maria delle Grazie and of San Giovanni in Brolo, as well as a "Madonna with Child", which once was on the façade of the San Michele Hospital
