Gemona del Friuli

History

Gemona del Friuli, strategically positioned along the road from the Adriatic to the Alps, developed a flourishing economy. Venetian domination led to its decline, aggravated by the Napoleonic invasions.

Only with the annexation to the Kingdom of Italy and the construction of the railway did the little town see recovery, which was then interrupted by the Great War. After the earthquake in 1976, Gemona became a symbol of rebirth with the ‘Friuli Model’, attracting lots of visitors for its historical and natural heritage.

Architecture

Established in the Middle Ages, Gemona del Friuli is home to examples of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, with masterpieces such as the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and the Sanctuary of Sant’Antonio, the oldest place of worship dedicated to this saint.

A strategic point for trade, the old town centre features numerous frescoed buildings that survived the 1976 earthquake. After the tragedy, the town became a symbol of rebirth, restoring its original appearance in a reconstruction project that was admired worldwide.

The castle now houses several exhibitions of historical and cultural interest, while the film library houses an invaluable collection of films and photos available to researchers, historians and enthusiasts.

Local Area

Gateway to the Alps, nestled between the Tagliamento River and the mountains Cuarnan and Cjampon, Gemona features a fascinating and varied natural landscape. It has a real vocation for an active life and outdoor activities, suitable for all ages and levels of preparation. It is ideal for hiking, cycling, flying and even water sports.

Gemona is at the crossroads of the FVG1 Alpe Adria Radweg, FVG3 Pedemontana, and FVG6 Tagliamento cycle routes, making it a key point for two-wheelers, especially with the station being a strategic hub for intermodality and connections.

Along the different routes, you will encounter historical and artistic beauties, such as the little church of Sant’Agnese, the remains of the hermitage and the Forte di Monte Ercole. The little lake of Minisini, the Piana di Gemona and the Ledra route are popular tourist destinations that always offer new surprises with every visit.
