The
Doge's Cathedral of Palmanova with its imposing bell tower is one of the most authoritative buildings overlooking
Piazza Grande.
It is
the town's most important church and was built in the first half of the seventeenth century. The building recalls the Venetian architectural style of Palladian inspiration, whereas the interior decorations are based on Baroque standards.
The exterior façade is imposing and is divided into two orders: in the lower one you can admire some huge half-columns that make the structure and the three entrances (the central one and two smaller side entrances) soar vertically; the upper order, on the other hand, features niches containing the statues of the Redeemer, of St. Mark and of St. Justina (to whom the Cathedral is dedicated).
The recent renovation of the façade has brought splendour to the building, enhancing the play of colours created by the combination of white stone from Vrsar and grey stone from Aurisina.
The interior is adorned with frescoes, among which the "Pala delle Milizie" (Altarpiece of Militias) by Alessandro Varotari - also known as Il Padovanino - which can be dated back to 1641, stands out. The works by Pomponio Amalteo and the small wooden Madonna attributed to Domenico of Tolmezzo stand out as well.
