Tricesimo
Tricesimo is situated at the feet of the first morainic hills, formed by the ancient glacier of the river Tagliamento.
Tricesimo was founded in 60 B.C. when Julius Caesar stopped here while he was going to Norico to conquest it and decided to strengthen the "Castrum" (defensive fortress) where nowadays there is the village of Borgobello.
The name Tricesimo comes from "Tricesimum", which means the stone which indicated the distance from Aquileia.
In 1139 the Patriarchate gave the parish church at the town.
According to the strategic position of the area, the Patriarch Gregorio of Montelongo decided to built there a fortress that, since 1253, hosted the first chamberlain of the county.
Until 1420 the Castle was under the Counts of Gorizia, the Patriarchs of Aquileia and the Counts of Prampero.
In 1948 the castle became a Sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Nowadays it is a place for spiritual retreat. The gentilitial chapel of the castle hosts sixteenth-century frescoes of the famous painter Pomponio Amalteo.
