Torviscosa

An imposing red-brick industrial establishment and, opposite, the company town which was intended to house the managers and workers of the SNIA Viscosa company: built in the 1930s, Torviscosa features the architectural characteristics typical of the cities founded for the integral land reclamation promoted during the fascist era, but also the urban organisation commissioned by the factory with an establishment division based on the functions and the professional categories.

An autarkic history

The founding of this industrial town is linked to the situation of Italy of the time and, in particular, to the autarchy which forced the SNIA Viscosa to search for a place to grow and process marsh canes; "national" surrogate of wood to produce cellulose which was essential for its textile production. The factory was therefore established, entailing the organisation of the surrounding countryside to adapt to the existing crops and a new city called Torviscosa was founded on what remained of the small rural village inspired by poet Filippo Tommaso Marinetti who even dedicated a poem on the endeavor.
