Terzo d'Aquileia

The origin of Terzo d'Aquileia is certainly Roman; the places such as Terzo, Sesto and Tricesimo used to be staging posts and stations of the five roads that set off from Aquileia in order to connect them to the rest of the Italian, Rhaetian, Noricoan and Pannonian provinces.

The ancient name of the village was "Ad tertium lapidem" i.e. the third tombstone or memorial, placed three miles far from Aquileia.

The historical events of Terzo were always bound to those of the nearby Roman colony.

In 452 Aquileia and its neighbourhood suffered for the Hun's devastation. As a consequence of it, all traces of Terzo went lost.

Only about six centuries later the name Terzo reappeared in some documents.

In 1042 the surrounding villas were donated by the Patriarch of Aquileia to convent of S. Maria. However, in 1138, the entire area passed under the Patriarch's direct administration.

After the Peace Treaty of Worms (1508) made between Venetia and the Emperor Maximilianus I, Terzo passed under the Austrian rule till 1918 - except for Napoleon's short time - when it returned to Italy.
