Rive d'Arcano
It is the plural of the Latin word ripa, slope, recalling the town's position at the foot of the hills. The word "villa" is not to be intended in its modern meaning of "luxurious residence", but in the classical meaning of "village", "built-up area".
The territory of Rive d'Arcano preserves ancient traces rooted in prehistory: the ruins of a "Castelliere" (fortified borough), which stood on the morainic terrace in a locality called "Zucule" to the west of the present town of Rive d'Arcano between the Patoc and Corno streams.
On the panoramic road that links San Daniele to Fagagna, two obeliskssuggest a detour to the left: they are the entrance gate to Arcano Superiore, a magical villagesuspended in time, watched over by a medieval castleresounding with ancient legends, surrounded by a double circle of walls.
In the surroundings you will find the Castle of Arcano, a massive twelfth-century building, which comprises a seventeenth-century building. It is one of the best preserved castles in the Province of Udine.
