Mereto di Tomba
The name Mereto or Melereto has appeared since the end of the 15th century to indicate the "place where apples are grown".
Afterwards, due to the finding of a prehistoric tomb probably dating back to the age of the castellieri (fortified boroughs), the name was transformed into Mereti tumbae.
Many are the interesting places present in the territory of Mereto di Tomba. An example is the mill of Marchet, situated on the bank of the Ledra stream and built in 1881. The mill is still in working order and provides evidence of the past agricultural activity.
The castelliere of Savalons (a hamlet of Mereto di Tomba) is situated in the high plain of Friuli and is one of the best preserved castellieri in the region. It features a square shape, with rounded corners.
In Savalons you will also find the Church of San Marco del Friuli, one of the gems of Friuli's art in the early twentieth century.
