Forni di Sopra
UNESCO World Heritage
Surrounded by the wonderful summits of the Eastern Friulian Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, situated in the heart of a wide and sunny valley, Forni di Sopra is in Carnia, in the eastern part of the Friulian Dolomites Natural Park, one of the largest in the Alps and one of the richest in wild animals.
Territory
As a whole, the territory stretches from the 900 metres of the town to the nearly 2600 metres of the highest summit and its natural characteristics allow to practice many outdoor sports all year round in close contact with nature.
Architecture
In the town centre the houses (once used as houses and haylofts) are characterized by a lower stone part, an upper wood part and by the presence of external staircases and balconies. Its heart is the Piazza del Comune, overlooked by ancient buildings, with a beautiful stone fountain.
We suggest a tour in the hamlet of Cella, where you will find the Parish Church of Santa Maria Assunta and the fifteenth-century San Floriano Church, a national monument. The latter preserves a wonderful polyptych of 1480 by Andrea Bellunello depicting Saint Florian and is decorated by an important cycle of frescoes by Gianfrancesco da Tolmezzo.
The rural hamlet of Andrazza, one of the three historic hamlets of Forni di Sopra, is characterized by stone and wood houses with haylofts and cattle sheds. Moreover, burial graves of the 7th-8th century A.D. were found in the territory of the hamlet. Near the hamlet stands the castle of Sacuidic (12th-13th century A.D.), whose remains are being excavated and restored.
In Clevas you will find the Cuol di Ciastiel, a castrum that is still being studied and explored, where some finds dating back to the 4th-5th century A.D. were found.
Forni di Sopra provides tourists with comfortable hotels, over two thousand beds in apartments, a campsite open all year round, a caravan area, excellent restaurants renowned for their typical dishes based on wild herbs, mushrooms and mountain products.

For sports enthusiasts, Forni di Sopra is provided with two football pitches, tennis courts, a bowls area, roller skating and ice skating facilities, a children's play area with inflatables, and, indoors, a multi-purpose gym suitable for team sports: five-a-side football, basketball, volleyball, tennis, bowls, machine gym, climbing practice wall and the new wellness centre comprising a Finnish sauna, an infrared sauna, a steam room, chromotherapy showers, massage room, tanning beds, Kneipp baths, whirlpool, lagoon (a shallow pool for children) with a water game and slide.

Snow-covered snowboard, cross-country ski and Alpine ski runs are just a taste of the rich offer of the Forni di Sopra ski area. Great fun for children: a baby snow park and the ski school to spend pleasant days on the snow.
Forni di Sopra in summer
Climbing, hiking, mountain biking and Nordic walking are some of the sports you can practice in summer; this territory, in fact, offers an extremely wide range of itineraries. Forni di Sopra hosts the "Spring herb festival" that, along with "Forni, mushrooms and … gastronomy", which is held in September, is a unique opportunity to discover a different world, in harmony with the rhythms of nature. Then, in blossom time, the mountains get full of colours and visitors can enjoy amazing views: from the red of the rhododendron, to the intense yellow of the buttercups, to the many colours of lilies and orchids. A unique scenery rich in surprises and unexpected beauties.
