Castions di Strada

The name "Castions di Strada" derives from the Latin word "Castrum" (that means fortification) and indicates a village built along the road "Postumia".

Now agricoltural and craft centre, it was for many centuries the scene of many cruel fights: first came the Hungarians who disturbed the peacefulness and quietness granted either by the Langobards and the Francs.

Under the Patriarchate, Castions di Strada lived a long period of peace and welfare but, as Napoleon arrived, there were only plunders and fees to pay.

However, it was in this period that the ancient road "Postumia", was renovated: the result was a straighter and smoother way, according to reach the Fortress of Palmanova, that is nowadays still called "Napoleonica".
