Valvasone Castle is at the heart of the small town with the same name that is considered one of “
Italy’s most beautiful villages” and is also known as the Brides’ Village. Built in the late twelfth century on pre-existing ancient ruins, the castle was owned by the noble Valvasone dynasty whose name (which means “wolf grange” in old German) appears on the coat-of-arms. Damaged and restored several times, it now resembles a Renaissance palace. Over the centuries it has welcomed many illustrious figures such as Pope Gregory XII in 1409, Pope Pius VI in 1782 and Napoleon Bonaparte in March of 1797. Thanks to a recent restoration project, it is possible to admire the exquisite 17th century theater with a splendid antique frieze from the late 16th century. In another room, frescoes from the mid-fourteenth century were brought to light portraying a rare series of secular images.
