Once a year Trieste’s unique beauty becomes world-known thanks to the annual regatta Barcolana, named after the local beach- Barcola.
This year the 51st regatta welcomed 2015 boats from around the world. Departed at about 10.30 am with almost no wind, the regatta was the center of attention of most Triestini (and Italiani via Rai Sport).
While many boats were in for some fun (you could see many smaller boats drifting with a glass of Prosecco in hand), there were three main competitors that were in for the win. Port Piccolo’s “Tempus Fugit”, the winner of the last two regattas, was among the favorites in the competition.
However, a little after an hour and before passing the first buoy, EWOL (that stands for the “Way of life”) was able to get ahead and eventually win the regatta in a little under two hours.
The beauty of this experience was to see the local Triestini people having fun on their boats, celebrating the Trieste way of life, without thinking about competing.
In Trieste it is common to have a boat, whether it is handed down to you by your grandparents or you buy it yourself, it is the epitome of life in Trieste. And Barcolana is just that- the celebration of life, alla Triestina.
