Explorers retracing the steps of dinosaurs at the “Villaggio del Pescatore”

In a small village along the coast that leads from Trieste to Grado, one of the most important palaeontological sites is situated, where some of the largest and most intact skeletons of dinosaurs were found.
We are at the “Villaggio del Pescatore” (Fishermen’s Village) in Duino Aurisina, where some experts identified the first fossil remains in the 1980s, which led to the discovery of the Dinosaur known as Antonio . It was a unique find in the world, as it is an intact and complete skeleton. Subsequent excavations have brought to light the remains of ten other dinosaurs, and work is still in progress, since the area appears to be a site of prehistoric fossils!

Since our two-year-old daughter loves dinosaurs in this period, we did not miss the opportunity to let her experience a visit to the palaeontological site, run by extremely well-trained staff who can entertain even the youngest.

Don’t expect a Jurassic Park-style fun park, here we are at a real palaeontological site, where researchers are still working. Some finds have been moved to the Museo di Scienze Naturali (Natural Science Museum) of Trieste to protect them from the inclement weather.
The dinosaurs discovered date back to 95 million years ago and the visit is an amazing leap back in time. For older children and adults, it would be ideal to combine the visit to the excavations with a visit to the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale (Civic Museum of Natural History) in Trieste.

The “Villaggio del Pescatore” palaeontological site is open every Sunday from March to November (March – October – November from 10am – 5pm; in April – May – June – September from 10am – 6pm; in July and August from 4.30pm – 8.30pm). It is open all year round, upon booking, for groups of at least 15 people.
