Fear: it resides in expectations, in what we imagine is yet to come. It is the emotion that anticipates events. It is already there: it arrives and points the way, as in the geography of myth. And yet, while it foresees defeat, it also prevents it. All we need is to look beyond what our eyes—so often deceptive—believe they see: they do not perceive what lies before them, but what the mind is already expecting.
Our gaze registers differences. Our story may then resemble that of Perseus and Medusa: not to yield to the monster’s gaze, not to turn to stone before a terror that already seems familiar. Shielded, we may return victorious, perhaps riding Pegasus.
Will it happen? Who knows. If we began to see through different eyes, a surprise might be waiting for us. If fear in our thoughts were overcome by our actions, perhaps a miracle would reveal itself. Why not follow it as far as it leads us?
From 16 to 26 July, the Central European festival Mittelfest returns with a rich programme of music, dance, theatre and circus performances featuring artists from around the world. This year's central theme is Fear.
