Puglia – Camp 65. Between 1941 and 1942, at the height of the Fascist era, a new military camp was completed on an area of 31 hectares between the cities of Altamura and Gravina. There were 36 barracks that held up to 12,000 Allied prisoners of war (British, South Africans, New Zealanders, Canadians, Cypriots, Palestinians) mainly from the North African front. It became the largest Italian-held Allied prisoner-of-war camp of World War II. Until September 1943, the internees, little more than boys, often volunteers, lived there in harsh conditions: chronic lack of food, water, and sanitation. After the end of the war, in November 1950, the camp was handed over to the Ministry of the Interior to be transformed into a refugee reception center. From 1951 to 1962, it housed refugees repatriated from Africa, Venezia Giulia, and the Dalmatian coast.
