What to do at high altitude

Visit the hidden corners and the sanctuary and taste the traditional dishes of this border region

A land of encounters where the traditions of three diverse people embrace in that stretch of woods, meadows, and rocks lying between the most imposing peaks of the Julian Alps and the rounded ridge of the Carnic Alps.

The winter in the area of Tarvisio is the opportunity to use the Monte Santo di Lussari cable car to climb up to the picturesque village clinging to the summit at 1740 metres and visit its hidden corners and the sanctuary and taste the traditional dishes of this border region. The view from this privileged vantage point will span the rocky peaks of Montasio and Jof Fuart, the Gail valley, and the austere Slovenian peaks all the way to the perennial ice of Austria.
Some of the activities being proposed require adequate physical and technical preparation because they are performed in a high mountain environment. In winter, snowpack conditions can change suddenly in response to changing weather conditions: a good knowledge of the processes of snow transformation and settlement is mandatory in the case of outings that take place beyond controlled areas, such as ski resorts.

Consulting the regional avalanche bulletin (Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia - Avalanche Bulletin) is a practice that must precede every outing in snow-covered terrain. The use of avalanche transceiver equipment and a safety kit consisting of a Snow Shovel and Probe is also a good practice. The correct use of these devices and the understanding of their full functionality are fundamental elements of the safety ring that travelling on snowy winter terrains require.

The mountain professionals of the Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia are available to safely guide you into the magical world of winter.

  • Borgo Lussari Village
The nearby village and the sanctuary can be visited without difficulty by both young and old and are only a short distance from the top station of the cable car. No special equipment is required for the walk, and the paths are always clear of snow as they lead through inns and several places to eat and rest.
  • Hunter's Peak (Cima Cacciatore)
The itinerary is reserved for experts and reaches the nearby Cima Cacciatore dome at 2071 metres through the intimacy of the amphitheatre under the summit. The last part of the climb presents mountaineering difficulties that require a careful assessment of safety conditions throughout the entire route.

Difficulty level: medium
Duration one-way: 2.00 hours from the summit of Lussari
Total elevation gain: approximately 400 metres
Notes: a ski mountaineering track which is usually well traced
