This trail forms a long walking itinerary that connects all the most important and significant places of the Great War along the current border with Slovenia. The route starts from Lod Pod Mangartom (in Slovenia) and arrives in Trieste, covering a total of 420 km in 25 stages, 12 in Slovenia and 13 in Friuli Venezia Giulia. This path allows visitors to remember the events, crossing the places, and learning stories related to the battles from the Caporetto retreat and the Carso front, offering unique experiences from a naturalistic, cultural, and historical perspective.
The section that crosses the Natisone Valleys includes the stages of Castelmonte and Mount Matajur. Throughout this itinerary, the cross-border atmosphere is always present, especially at the open-air museum of the Colovrat plateau and the Solarie pass, which were the scenes of dramatic events during the Great War and the retreat from Caporetto, where the "third Italian defense line" stood at an altitude of 1115 meters. The historical paths have been restored and made accessible, as well as the trenches and fortifications of the First World War, which can be reached in about 1 hour on foot from the Solarie refuge.
Access is easy, suitable for both adults and children, allowing everyone to observe the machine gun and cannon positions, caves, command posts, and observation points.
