The Rural Village Cras/Kras

The small settlements are located on the ridge that completes the amphitheater of the Colovrat mountain range. The toponym Cras means "stony ground"; Oznebrida/Ocnebardo derives from the Slovenian "ocne-bardo" (paternal hill), while Trusgne/Trušnje is of uncertain etymology.
The villages have a compact settlement structure, consisting of houses and cottages. Interesting are the rural buildings called "kaste" dating back to the 15th century: small buildings with a single room on three levels, used for storing agricultural products, hay, and as temporary sleeping quarters. The stone base is situated on sloping ground, the mezzanine floor has walls made of overlapping wooden planks fitted at the corners, while the attic floor, with very steep pitches, is covered with a straw roof. These buildings repeat the most archaic forms of traditional Slovenian dwellings: a single-cell house with an open hearth consisting of a stone base and wooden structure and a roof covered in wooden shingles or straw.
The village of Cras (in Slovenian Barnjak or Razpotje) has an upper part, with two large buildings used as a tavern, the town hall, and the rectory, while the lower part is a rural settlement. At the highest point is the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta. From here, one can overlook the vast amphitheater of Colovrat, a landscape of significant environmental value.
