Resia

History

The people of Resia settled in the valley presumably between 625 and 631 AD. From the late Middle Ages and throughout the Modern Era the valley depended mainly on the Benedictine Abbey of San Gallo in Moggio Udinese.

During the period of the Patria del Friuli the administrative, political and religious centre was governed by the Patriarchs of Aquileia. The fiefdom was later led by a commendatory abbot.

This was followed by brief periods of the Habsburg Monarchy, the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy (during which, in 1805, the current municipality of Resia was established by unifying the previous four municipalities) and the Austrian Empire. In 1866 Resia, like Friuli, was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy.

Architecture

In the outlying villages of Stolvizza, Coritis and Uccea, visitors can admire the typical architecture of Resia which features a relatively simple plan (rectangular and with two rooms) and a structure composed of large stone walls and a double-pitched wooden roof. The first floor is accessed via external stairs while the second floor, where the barn was, is accessed via a wooden ladder.

Right in Stolvizza in a typical old house, the Museum of the People of the Resia Valley is housed, with even a section dedicated to the tradition of fairy tales. Stolvizza's museum offerings also include the Museum of the Knitter, where tools and photographs of this ancient craft can be admired.

Also of architectural interest are the planine, rural buildings located on high ground where people lived with their livestock in the summer. Also of value is the parish church and Sanctuary of Santa Maria Assunta located in the capital Prato, which has been documented since 1098 and was consecrated, in its current style, in 1718 and became a shrine in 2019.

Local Area

Val Resia is a valley of glacial origin, located in the north-eastern area of Friuli Venezia Giulia on the border with Slovenia. It is surrounded by mountains, whose main peak is Mount Canin (2,587 m) and is crossed by a stream, the Resia.

The Resia Valley and the Uccea Valley, which is also crossed by a stream of the same name, make up the Municipality of Resia, which covers an area of 119 km².

The capital of the municipality is Prato/Ravanza, home to the Julian Pre-Alps Park visitor center and the Rozajanska kulturska hiša cultural center, which promotes the music, dance and traditional costumes of Resian culture. Together with the hamlets St. Giorgio/Bila, Gniva/Njïwa, with Lischiazze/Lišćaza and Gost/Ta-na Huzdë, Oseacco/Osoanë, Stolvizza/Solbiza, Coritis/Korïto, and Uccea /Učja it reaches 1,000 inhabitants. The Sella Carnizza basin offers a beautiful view of the stavoli, some of which have been converted into places to eat.

The area is mainly covered by forests of black pine, Scots pine and beech. Most of the area is included in the Julian Prealps Nature Park.
