Wonderful circular route that crosses enchanting places: the Fleons Valley, the Sissanis Hollow, and the splendid Bordaglia lake. Excursion of geological, historical, and naturalistic interest.
This route develops in one of the most valuable naturalistic areas of the Carnic Chain, inside the Bordaglia-Fleons wildlife oasis established by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region in 1968, characterized by rich vegetation with many varieties of wildflowers and orchids, where chamois, roe deer, and red deer live undisturbed, as well as marmots, western capercaillie, black grouse, and many others dominated by the golden eagle. Lake Pera is inhabited by the Alpine Newt and the Black Salamander.
The area also includes some sites of notable geological interest characterized by the presence of the Bordaglia Valley Fault Line, a set of tectonic faults. The area consists of a succession of metamorphic rocks from the Paleozoic basement and Devonian and Triassic limestones.
During World War I, these places were the scene of fierce fighting between the Royal Italian Army and the Austro-Hungarian Imperial Army. The first Italian line ran in the area from Mount Navagiust to Sissanis Saddle and from there to Pascoli Elevation and Spina Pesce. Battles were fierce in these places and war relics are still visible.
War artifacts at the Fleons Gorge and at Pascoli Elevation. For additional information, a visit to the Forni Avoltri Great War Museum is recommended.
At Lower Bordaglia Hut, behind the Don Bosco Little Church, it is possible to access (200 m) a machine gun position carved into the rock, where an inscription recalls the passage of Corporal Benito Mussolini in 1916 on this part of the front (caution: rough path).
