From Casera Ramaz to Fabiani Refuge at Pecol di Chiaula Pass

 

A solitary and quiet slope along the border with Austria


The peculiarities-rich route develops in the miiddle carnic chain, along the southern slope of the border's ridge. It touches Fabiani Refuge -born from the restoring of an old dairy hut - and reaches Pecol di Chiaula Pass, one of the most frequented passages in past times.

The itinerary develops along a solitary and quiet ridge (it is in fact identified as "Route of Silence" with indications along the track) that constitutes a shelter for a moltitude of animal and vegetal species. Start from the Casera Ramaz alm complex (where you can taste the local food produces), passing through the pasture of Casera Lodin, no longer operative, and nearby the still operative Casera Lodin Alta.

Description:
The trail starts by Malga di Ramaz (elevation 1050mt), which is a hub of the local hiking network. Among the various indications (that at the start may share some stretch), it is necessary refer to CAI 4545 roadmark, which you must follow for the whole route.

Hike up for some time into the wood and then take a crossing path to the road going up to Lodin. Hike up several stretches of the old trail, crossing woods of beeches and sprices until Casera di Lodin Bassa (elevation 1443mt). From here the trail turns into a pathway.

Crossing a neautiful glade and ignoring any deviation from roadmark 454, proceed toward the rangelands of the ex-Casera Pecol di Chiaula, converted by some time into Fabiani Refuge (elevation 1539mt), which kept the original structure.

From here turn right onto bends among sparce beeches and larches. Then, higher up, proceed through rangelands until you reach Pecol di Chiaula Pass (elevation 1873mt), where the panorama onto Austria spreads out.

At a short distance from the pass, in Austrian territory, the Dr. Steinwender Hütte (Austrian refuge) and the charming Zollnersee alpine lake in a context of great naturalistic value thanks to the rich alpine blooms, other than of historical interest because of the numerous Great War tracks straddled across the border.

Access:
Proceeding along Carnia state road toward Tolmezzo-Mt. Croce Carnico Pass, at Cedarchis, by the bridge over Chiarsò River, turn right toward Paularo. At the village, take the long and narrow road leading to Cason di Lanza Pass until Casera Ramaz, where the road bends east toward the pass.
