Mersino Alto (Upper) - Saint Lawrence Church

[8th-13th centuries]

From the hill where the small building is situated, one can enjoy a splendid panorama, both towards Caporetto and the Pradolino Valley. Built on ancient foundation, it was built in the 13th century. It was renovated following the damage caused by the earthquakes in 1511 and 1513 and restored again in 1869. The building we see today has a single-nave plan, with a square presbytery that is higher than the nave, possibly added in the 18th century. The masonry is exposed stone, with regular ashlars reinforced at the corners; the façade is characterized by the single entrance opening, framed in stone and surmounted by a small bell gable. The roof structure is pitched, with tiles and an underlying stone molding on the two long sides of the perimeter.
Inside, there is a stone and marble altar with statues of Saint Lawrence and Saint Joseph on either side. Another statue of Saint Lawrence is present in a niche. The church is included in the “Cammino delle 44 chiesette votive” (Path of the 44 Votive Chapels) of the Natisone Valleys.
