Seaside, wind and freedom: kitesurfing in Lignano Sabbiadoro

Thanks to Lignano Sabbiadoro’s favourable exposure to the prevailing winds such as bora (north-easterly wind), scirocco (south-easterly wind) and the sea breeze, kitesurfing is possible all year round, albeit in different guises.

From October until May kitesurfing can be practiced along the entire 8 km length of the beach. On windy days all those brightly coloured kites moving along the coastline propelled by the wind and skilfully steered by kitesurfers - who flock here even in cold weather - is quite a sight to behold.

During the swimming season, however, wind sports enthusiasts move to the enchanting wilderness of Isola delle Conchiglie (the Isle of Shells), a couple of kilometres away from the iconic Red Lighthouse.

The Isola delle Conchiglie is characterised by golden sandy beaches and shallow waters that go on for hundreds of metres. It presents itself as an ideal wind spot where to learn and practice kitesurfing: the onshore wind guarantees a safe return to the beach, and the extensive sandy area -clear of any obstacles - provides a perfect location for land-based exercises and for equipment assembly.

Local sports clubs are active all year round and provide the best qualified instructors to teach kitesurfing to adults and children alike.
