Fortified posts in the trench – stage I

All the stages of Park 40 are characterized by the recovery of some stretches of the great Austro-Hungarian trenches. Symbolically, the curators decided to create some areas of 14X18 metres for each stage, that could be visited and that recall the years at the beginning and end of the war.

In this case, through the original walkway, you can move along the trench that gradually becomes lower and lower (about 1.50 metres) until you reach the point where the shooting post was situated. Particularly interesting is the elbow rest, that was used by the soldiers to shoot more precisely and which is still visible on the parapet in parts of the trench.
Looking towards the Gulf of Trieste, you can see how the land is particularly steep. It is a small artificial embankment, an additional defence for the trench line in case there was an attack coming from the coast.
