Nimis is a hill town located among woods and gentle hills: once an ancient Roman fortification and now the land of the magnificent wines of the Eastern Hills of Friuli, it is woven with quiet paths immersed in a stunning natural landscape, perfect for pleasant hikes. In Roman times, Mount Zuccon intercepted the route that connected Forum Iulii (Cividale del Friuli) to the consular road leading from Aquileia to Noricum, strategically important in the Late Antique and Early Medieval periods for the Castrum Nemas, mentioned by Paul the Deacon. Just outside the town is the Sanctuary of Madonna delle Pianelle, while other important monuments include the church of Saints Gervasio and Protasio (one of the oldest places of worship in Friuli), and the churches of San Mauro and San Giovanni Battista. The clear waters of the Cornappo stream offer a stunning view of its gorge, caves, and Mount Bernadia. It's also worth visiting the rural villages of Torlano (Upper and Lower), Monteprato, Cergneu, and Vigant, with its abyss. There is a wide range of Mountain Bike and E-bike trails here. This land is also known as the home of Ramandolo, a fine sweet white wine that was the first Friulian wine to receive the DOCG designation.
