The territory of San Leonardo, located at the bottom of the valleys of the Erbezzo and Cosizza streams, has been inhabited since the 11th century starting with Slavic populations who arrived through the Polava, Solarie, and Clinaz passes. They settled here and engaged in agriculture and pastoral activities.
From the Patriarchal period until the 13th century, these lands were the fiefdom of Henricus dictus Birbiz of Cividale. However, from the late 15th century until the end of the 18th century, they established an autonomous administrative structure entrusted to the "bank" of Merso. This body, as in all of the Benecia (Italian Slavia), entrusted the assembly of heads of families with the administration of common affairs and justice, according to rules engraved on a stone called the "Merso Bank slab," preserved in the small village.
Noteworthy are the votive chapels within the small villages, such as the Church of Saint Anthony the Abbot in Merso di Sopra or the Church of Saint Lucia, Virgin and Martyr, in Cravero, along with the charming examples of traditional rural architecture. There are also many interesting hiking trails, such as those from Scrutto to Castelmonte, from Clastra to San Martino, or the site with the beautiful Kot waterfalls.
This area offers numerous routes ideal for Mountain Biking and E-biking.
