The Rural Village Plataz/Platac
The visit starts from Plataz, a toponym from the Slovenian Platac, plat (flat terraced land), continues towards the valley up to Brida, from Bardo, brdo (hill), and then goes up to Canalaz, from Kanalac (person coming from Kanal). The villages are located on the slopes of the southern side of Mount San Martino, passing from Brida Inferiore (the lowest point, at 410 m above sea level), to Canalaz (600 m above sea level), at the highest point.
Brida is mentioned in 1299 as a fiefdom of "Domini Jacomini de Civitate". In lower Brida, there is a rural building dating back to the 17th century, made up of two independent residential units. The façade features a double row of wooden balconies with an external staircase, protected by the steep slope of the eaves. The beautiful agricultural landscape consists of terraced fields cultivated with vines and orchards.
Plataz is the largest village. At the end, there is a house built in 1887, which has remained almost unchanged. A long building parallel to the road with a central passage porch that leads to the rooms and contains the staircase to the wooden balconies on the first floor. In the lower part of the village, there is the former dairy, which is now a small museum exhibiting equipment for processing milk.
Canalaz is just below the Prievalo pass and the summit of Mount San Martino, home to the ancient chapel of the same name. Some buildings are examples of traditional architecture: the "kosolec" of Canalaz resembles those of Skofja Loka with six load-bearing pillars made of stone instead of wood.
