Costne/Hostne - St. Matthias the Apostole Church
[14th -16th; 18th -19th centuries]
St. Matthias the Apostle church appears to date back to the late Romanesque period; it was rebuilt in the early 16th century following the earthquakes of 1511-1513, and was reconsecrated in 1544 by Luca Bisanzio, vicar of the patriarch. Further restoration work was carried out in the mid-1700s and in 1869.
The rectangular atrium is open only at the front and has a pavilion roof. The bell tower's three-arched window, made of bricks and located at the top of the roof, is a recent work. A beautiful Moorish arch door, with a splayed stone frame and a cross carved in bas-relief, leads into the rectangular hall with an exposed beam ceiling, dimly lit by a skylight and a single pointed arch window located in the choir. It seems that the hall was raised in the 17th century. A significantly lowered semicircular arch leads into the polygonal presbytery, with a vaulted ceiling and ribs. The altar is made of masonry; the three wooden statues adorning it belonged to a wooden altar from the 17th century. The furnishings include a beautiful embossed silver lamp placed in the center of the room, an 18th-century wooden crucifix, and a mid-18th-century silver processional cross. The church is part of "The Path of the 44 Votive Chapels" that winds through the villages of the Valleys.
